🇨🇦 The daily news is a rich source of examples of the behaviours and practices #Deming warned against decades ago. Today's entry comes courtesy of the Canadian Institute for Procurement and Material Management (CIPMM) who, with good intentions, created an "Unsung Heroes" award in 2021 for teams or individuals who discover innovative and effective procurement techniques recognition for their efforts during the pandemic response. Savvy Canadians can probably already sense where this is heading: One of the 17 teams who shared this new award was none other than the one for the Canadian Border Services Agency who greenlit the now-infamous, scandal-plagued, $60M ArriveCan app. This is a fine cautionary tale about how rewarding schemes go pear-shaped: They always, ALWAYS, say more about those doing the rewarding than the rewarded. Suitably chastened, the CIPMM is said to now be reviewing their processes to learn how they ended up awarding a team who had obvious ethical and legal breaches for their "innovative" practices. Notably: They don't have a process for /retracting/ an award. Perhaps they should start there before moving on to learning why recognition awards do more harm than good. #systemsthinking #leadership #deming

How much can government procurement practices set back digital transformation? Carleton University's Amanda Clarke, Chantal Brosseau, Anne Lajoie, and Sean Boots tackled this question with their critical evaluation of the government of Canada's procurement practices and found: "Federal IT procurement is thus at odds with responsible public money stewardship, singles Canada out amongst its peers as a digital government laggard, and ultimately, threatens the quality of programs affecting the public’s welfare. The status quo, as described and evaluated in this paper, is not a sustainable path forward for the federal government." Singles Canada out amongst its peers as a laggard... Their recommendations require serious consideration, particularly around building capability inside the government. Here at the Info-Tech Research Group we work with governments across Canada every day on how to build capability and capacity instead of dependency. We've seen the difference this can make, and are glad to see the current state challenged by critical analysis. I think one place that CRMs are heavily underutilized is in consulting firms..   According to IBISWorld there are 154,000 consultants in Canada alone. That means 1 in every 25 of us works providing advice and expertise to other businesses (including myself at Cencomp Systems Solutions Inc.).   It’s a tight market and we have to be business minded to succeed. You’re only going to achieve this by having a good grip on your client base – i.e knowing what makes them tick.   A CRM can deliver some of this vital trust - especially as you begin to scale. Spreadsheets quickly get messy. REALLY MESSY. At its worst I’ve interacted with many companies (who I won’t name) that had hundreds of consultants deployed on the ground, working with top tier global clients, all of which were managed, time sheeted, and paid via excel. Any notes they had; projects work they had to deliver; customer insight and feedback – it all went into these “mega” sheets.   It was a bit like my post about the engineering firm who did their sales work on a spreadsheet. I just couldn’t believe it, because the technology to do better is out there – and it isn’t expensive or complicated.   We’re at a point where little ‘mom and pop’ consulting firms can launch into the bigger leagues just by getting their message across to potential work first. If their story and value is cohesive and is backed by technology that amplifies it – who’s to say they can’t win big fish?   I want to help bring CRMs to places where they are not being used (but have the potential to help). Can you believe it's been a whole year since I took the leap and joined the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat | Secrétariat du Conseil du Trésor du Canada 🇨🇦 Leaving the Canada Revenue Agency - Agence du revenu du Canada felt like a huge gamble as I had already built myself a clear career path there, but the chance to work on game-changing IT projects right at the heart of government was too good to pass up. So I jumped at the opportunity with closed eyes. The past year has been a whirlwind. Ten projects, each with its own unique challenges and rewards, have kept me on my toes. From streamlining internal processes to developing innovative digital solutions, surrounded by folks who are 10x smarter than I am — the work has been incredibly diverse and stimulating & I truly love the challenge. Moreover, I'm so lucky to have supportive colleagues and leaders who not only put up with my "out there" ideas, but actually encourage them! Navigating the ins and outs of government can be tricky, but they've always had my back. It's not all sunshine and rainbows, of course. There are days when the frustration & self-doubt gets too real, and I wonder if I've made the right choice. But then I remember why I'm here: to make a difference, even if it's just a small one. Seven years into my public service career, and that drive is still there. I'm so grateful for the opportunities I've had, and I'm more determined than ever to keep learning and growing as a leader. So, here's to the future!
